As a nodal agency for transport in Chennai, established in November 2010, by the Government of Tamil Nadu through a Statutory Act, we work on improving transport and transport infrastructure to ensure safe and sustainable urban mobility in Chennai. CUMTA is an institutional coordination mechanism across agencies/departments involved in Urban Transport in the Chennai Metropolitan Area for a seamless delivery of mobility services across Bus, Train and Metro Rail.

The rules of CUMTA were notified in January 2019 and CUMTA act was amended in January 2021 with Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as the Chairperson and the Minister in-charge of the Housing and Development as the Vice-Chairperson.

CUMTA’s jurisdiction extends to the whole Chennai Metropolitan Area 5904 Sq.Km - Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Ranipet.

CUMTA will work with multiple departments/agencies to take an integrated approach towards interventions and projects evolving street development, better transport systems, multi modal integration, common mobility payment systems, etc.

With CUMTA, creating transport system becomes integrated, collaborative and efficient. CUMTA promotes, oversees, coordinates and monitors the implementation of various transport and traffic measures in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). This will enable CUMTA to promote seamless integration of transport system across the entire urban area.
